Investigations

Patina Building Conservation can undertake a range of both non-intrusive and intrusive investigations to inform the understanding of the historic building, whether this be to gain a better understanding of the construction typology, materials or as part of defect analysis.

1

Timber Investigations

We can complete detailed investigations to understand the condition and risk of the timber components of your historic building. Through the use of specialist equipment, non-intrusive and intrusive investigations we can understand the, condition of roof structures, floors joists and other structural and non-structural timber including any embedded timber. We can advise on resolving the sources of moisture, methods of drying and management of the environment to resolve and prevent timber decay.

2

Moisture Mapping and Rainwater Management

Many historic buildings are now struggling to effectively manage the volume of rainfall that they are subjected to in a changed climate. Patina Building Conservation can complete analysis of the existing roof and rainwater goods to analyse whether the existing arrangement is effectively designed and sufficient to handle the current climate and where sensitive adaptations can be made.

We also complete analysis of abutment details, including leadwork, mortars and other intersections that help to keep rainwater out of the building.

3

Embedded Metalwork

Through the use of ferroscanning equipment (metal detecting) we can complete non-intrusive investigations to understand the location and depth of embedded metalwork in your building. We also use an endoscope / borescope for investigations where appropriate. We have extensive experience of completing surveys to church spires, towers and historic elevations, creating a record of the location of embedded metalwork and assessing the condition.

4

Tactile Inspections

At Patina Building Conservation we believe that there is no substitute for being able to get up close and hands on to fully understand the condition and potential defects that may be hidden from view. We have extensive experience of completing:

  • Tactile stone and brick surveys to understand stability and erosion.

  • Condition and stability assessments of high level masonry such as spires, pinnacles and parapets.

  • Condition assessments of roof coverings, ridge tiles and chimneys.

  • Understanding abutment detailing, poor workmanship and inadequate detailing.

4

Climate Change Adaptation

Patina Building Conservation can undertake comprehensive analysis of your building to understand the current condition, occupational use and environmental requirements to understand the historic buildings performance. Following this baseline survey and investigation, we can report and advise on sensitive adaptations to your traditional building without creating problems such as surface condensation, interstitial condensation, moisture trapping or overheating.
